Grand Trunk Road – Review

When we heard that Grand Trunk Road was debuting their new spring menu we knew we had to check it out.Grand Trunk Road - Review 1

A gorgeous restaurant in South Woodford Grand Trunk Road is the most recent venture from the same team who were formerly behind Tamarind in Mayfair. Using authentic flavours to create innovative dishes in the elegant atmosphere of their plush venue.

With at least two days of sunshine in the last week, spring has definitely arrived in London and we were looking forward to a chance to try their new dishes.

They started by serving poppadoms with a selection of chutneys including the unusual beetroot and fennel, and tomato and cinnamon chutneys. The Tomato and cinnamon was a particular favourite of mine.
We tried so many great dishes I almost want to just list them all here, but that would make some pretty monotonous reading I think. So I’ll just give you all the highlights. Of all the starters we had the chickpea chaat with wheat crisps and blueberries was my favourite, a bit spicy and a bit sweet. The crab meat cake with lemongrass, curry leaves, and potatoes were also great.

We were overwhelmed with options when the mains arrived. The slow cooked lamb shanks in an aromatic sauce were gorgeously flavoured and melting off the bone, and by far my favourite dish of the night. The bhindi, dhaal and lamb biryani were also great. And of course we had to try the truffle naan once we’d seen it on the menu, I’m not a fan of naan usually but even I liked it.

One of the standout dishes was the dessert cinnamon chocolate cake with a crisp top and covered in a rich chocolate sauce it was so tasty and a great way to end the meal.

They have a great cocktail and wine list, I particularly enjoyed the Masala Smash a whisky cocktail with a garam masala syrup.

A few of our party had special dietary requirements and the staff did a great job of catering to them and were knowledgeable about the menu, which is always a relief when you have allergies. The food was well presented and delicately flavoured, finer dining than you would expect from the unassuming restaurant front. Overall the service was good, the staff were attentive and the food tasted great.
